What Does a Realtor Really Do? Spoiler: It’s Not Selling Sunset
If you’ve ever tuned into Selling Sunset or another reality show about real estate, you might think Realtors spend their days sipping champagne, attending rooftop parties, and engaging in dramatic office rivalries. The truth? That couldn’t be further from reality.
Yes, I’ll even include a photo of me raising a glass of champagne — because that’s what people assume Realtors do all the time. But the reality is, you’re just as likely to catch me mowing a client’s yard when the landscaper didn’t show up. Not exactly the kind of thing Netflix makes a show about, but it’s the real day-to-day life of a Realtor.
Why It’s Not All Glamour
Networking events do happen, but not because we crave drama. We attend to build relationships with other agents and industry professionals so we can better serve our clients. And while some offices or teams might thrive on parties and distractions, those aren’t the agents consistently delivering results.
Here’s a little-known fact: there’s a 95% failure rate in real estate within the first 5 years. That number is staggering, but it highlights how tough this business really is. The agents who succeed are the ones putting in the hours behind the scenes — not the ones spending more time on selfies than service.
A Real Day in the Life of a Realtor
So, what does a Realtor actually do all day? More than most people imagine:
-
Negotiate Transactions and Repairs: Protecting our clients’ best interests at every step.
-
Analyze Market Data: Looking at both broad real estate trends and hyper-local market shifts to price and advise correctly.
-
Communicate with Agents: Gathering feedback from showings, sparking interest in listings, or uncovering off-market opportunities.
-
Market Listings: From professional photography and videos to targeted ads and social media campaigns.
-
Coordinate Services and Repairs: Guiding clients through inspections, connecting them with contractors, and making sure homes are ready for buyers.
-
Provide Emotional Support: Buying or selling a home is one of life’s top five stressors — part of our role is to be the steady voice of reason when things get overwhelming.
And yes, sometimes that means rolling up our sleeves — even mowing a lawn ourselves if that’s what it takes to get the job done.

Why Experience Matters
Realtors sometimes get a bad rap, and we get it. But when you’ve worked with an experienced, professional real estate advisor, you understand the difference. Good Realtors don’t just “open doors.” Great Realtors advocate, strategize, protect, and guide you through one of the most important financial and emotional decisions of your life.
At T. Kerr Property Group, we take that responsibility seriously. We aren’t here for the drama. We’re here to deliver results, ensure our clients are represented with the highest level of professionalism, and yes, do the unglamorous work when it’s needed.
Final Thoughts
So, no — being a Realtor isn’t about champagne parties and fancy cars. It’s about contracts, strategy, marketing, negotiations, emotional support, and sometimes even manual labor. You may never see our day-to-day on a TV show, but we think the real story is even better: working tirelessly behind the scenes to help families make some of the most important moves of their lives.
